Sedert anderhalve maand probeer ik het boek "Een korte geschiedenis van de tijd" te lezen, van Stephen Hawking en Leonard Mlodinov.
Het wordt verondersteld een toegankelijk boek te zijn dat op een eenvoudige manier de complexe begrippen die ruimte en tijd definieren, probeert uit te leggen.
Ondanks de inspanningen van de auteurs, blijft het toch moeilijke materie (en anti-materie, om in de taal van het boek te blijven ;-)


Een metafoor uit het boek, blijft maar nazinderen: als je kijkt naar de hemel op een heldere nacht, dan kan je zo'n 5000 sterren zien. Als je onze zon voorstelt als een korreltje zout, dan passen die 5000 sterren in een koffielepel zout, dan heb je 20.000 koffielepels nodig om enkel maar de sterren uit onze melkweg te "scheppen" ... en als je alle sterren uit het heelal wilt verzamelen, dan heb je een bol met zoutkorrels van zo'n 13 kilometer doorsnede!
.... moet er nog zand zijn (of zout ;-)?

een goede visualisatie over hoe ons onderwijs anders zou kunnen!

Als je 11min tijd hebt .... een hele leuke video van Ken Robinson (gevonden via de blog van Steve Denning, The Leader's Guide to Radical Management)

Een inhoud om over na te denken, die bovendien op een luchtige manier wordt gebracht (.... kijk maar ééns naar Man bijt Hond op Eén, daar gebruiken ze nu ook dergelijke visualisaties).
Met voorbeelden uit de USA, en in het Engels, maar daarom niet minder van toepassing op onze situatie in Belgie.

Dit stemt toch tot nadenken?

Lets start calling people - PEOPLE!

Thanks to David Gurteen for pointing me to an older blog post of him, and to a newer blog post of Steve Denning (the “story telling” guru), who is talking about the same issue: the language used in HR Departments to describe people: Human Resources, or Human Capital, or Talents, and how this affects the management style.

Bottom line: inspire people to accomplish work that delights customers, instead of viewing people as things to manage.

Zotte tijden?

Vanavond (19h30 zowat) terug gaan joggen … na enkele weken stilstand (voor diverse redenen …. waarbij veel slechte ;-)

Ik ben nog maar 500m. ver, en ik zie een man in zijn voordeur staan: aan het meezingen en dansen met een Hollandse schlager; die keihard uit het huis dreunt (ik vraag me af of de buren dat zo leuk vinden?)

Enfin, we gaan door.

Na een 25 minuten kom ik aan een gesloten overweg, waar ik 3 giechelende pubermeisjes per fiets tussen de slagbomen zie laveren: grote fun!

Enfin, ik jog wat heen en weer in de straat (tot de overweg terug open gaat), en we gaan door.

Na 15 minuten moet ik terug over het spoor, maar nu aan een andere overweg… en die is dicht …. je gelooft het niet: 3 vrij dronken volwassen mannen vinden het leuk om dan toch maar de oversteek te wagen: cool!

Enfin, we gaan door (nadat ondergetekende natuurlijk braafjes gewacht heeft op een open overweg).

En dan komt, zo’n 5 minuten voor ik thuis kom, de kers op de taart: een lichte vrachtwagen steekt me voorbij (ik denk aan zo’n 50km/h), met in zijn spoor, op minder dan 2 meter achter de vrachtwagen, 3 bezeten montainbikers !!! En dat in een drukke straat, waar die vrachtwagen ieder moment kan moeten remmen … als dat niet macho is …

Mag ik vermoeden dat het zotte tijden zijn?

Deze namiddag woonde ik een seminarie bij over het gebruik van MS Sharepoint voor kennismanagement doeleinden.
Bij het einde van de namiddag nodigde de organisator ons uit op een drink in de bar van het hotel, waar het seminarie plaatsvond.

De spreker eindigde dan ook als volgt: ... en dan kunnen we nog napraten aan de bar, daar zijn we nog weL effe.

Twitter-tags (or hashtags), what do they mean?

When starting to use Twitter, you often see a lot of Tweets that contain acronyms starting with a "#".
These are called hashtags ... this site allows users to explain their meaning.
Anybody can define his own hashtag, and as such, this site becomes a dictionary of hashtags.

The nifty thing about these hashtags is that:
1/ they are short (remember, Twitter only allows for 140 characters in a single message),
2/ they are easily searchable (check the Twitter search engine, that allows you to "save" your search as an RSS feed ... nice): if you want to keep track of Tweets about knowledge management, want do you need to search for ? "KM", or "knowledge management", or still some other name? No, just search for "#KM", the hashtag generally used to "tag" Tweets about knowledge management.

Dial2Do - a Great Voice Recorder !!!

I don't remember who pointed me to this site .... but I was looking for this already quite some time: a service where I can dial to, which records my voice message, and which sends the voice message back to me!

I have been using drop.io for quite some time (works nice, but you need to dial to a USA phone number !!!) (drop.io is really much more than a voice recorder .... it is an online storage place which is extremely easy to set-up and use !)

The advantage of Dial2Do is that it has an access point in Brussels.

drop.io drops your voice message into your RSS reader (it generates an RSS feed to the drop.io site), while Dial2Do notifies you with an email (the voice message is not attached to the email: you get a link to their site).

The way Dial2Do works: you register on Dial2Do (user-id, email address AND telephone number), and then you can dial the Brussels telephone number, Dial2Do recognizes your telephone number (Caller-ID should be on !!!), asks what you want to do, you say "reminder", the system acknowledges ... and off you go: you record your voice message, you disconnect, and the message is sent to your email address!
Quickly and easy: no voice recorder to drag along ... just your good old mobile phone (SPOI: Single Point of Interface?)

Do note that Dial2Do also let's you send text messages, and emails (I however did not yet try it out, so I cannot tell how well it works ... these options heavily rely on transcription)

Nice and free software !
